Exploration
We kept our new kittens in the laundry room for their first week. We visited them and spent quiet time with them in there, but did not allow them out, so that they could establish the laundry room as their home. After a week, though, I decided that they were established and comfortable enough to allow them into a little more of the house: the family room. So we kitty-proofed the family room, putting away all small objects, blocking off all the hiding places and unsafe things like electrical cords. Then I had the whole family come into the family room and sit on pillows with their current books and instructions to ignore the kittens when they came out. I opened the door to the laundry room, then sat down myself. The goal here, as always, was to give the kittens more and more access to the house, and to us, without frightening them. They needed to learn that this was a safe place and that we were safe humans. Loud noises, sudden movements, and humans approaching them and looming over them in a strange environment while making weird noises and fixing them with full stares and trying to touch them were all scary. So the room had to be quiet and still, and the humans had to be calm, focused on something else, and totally non-threatening. The kittens emerged from the laundry room very cautiously. They crept around the corner, peeked into the laundry room, then ventured into it, their bodies on full alert, looking and sniffing at everything. We ignored them, but watched them surreptitiously out of the corners of our eyes. At the slightest sound, they scampered back to the laundry room, which was GREAT, it meant that the laundry room had become their ‘safe space.’ Then they crept out again. We did this for an hour or so, then put them back in the laundry room. The next morning we let them out again. They were bolder this time, and more playful. They were interested in playing with a lure, and Owen built them a fort out of floor pillows and blankets, which they explored. A few days later Ellie kitten-proofed her room and we allowed them into there, following the same protocol. Ellie sat quietly in her room while the kittens explored every part of it, sniffing around the bookcases and jumping up on her desk. The next day Lela kitten-proofed her room and we allowed the kittens into that. We built a passageway from the family room to Lela’s hallway to accomplish this, as we weren’t ready to let them into the great room quite yet. They climbed on Lela’s desk and discovered the space under her bed. Finally, later that day, we allowed them into the great room. They cautiously explored that, sniffing the furniture, checking out the fireplace, and discovering the cat trees we got them. They were cautious but also confident, which I was happy to see. At some level it felt like they were finally getting to explore the rest of their house! And with that, the kitties had access to almost the entire house! We kept the master bedroom closed off, as well as Owen’s room and the bathrooms as those were not kitty-proofed, but that was it. They were now integrated into the main house!

Kitten-proofing the family room

IMG_6803.jpeg

We blocked off the space under the game cabinets

IMG_6812.jpeg

Opening the door to the laundry room!

IMG_6814.jpeg

Both kitties are intrigued by the open door

IMG_6815.jpeg

The male ventures out first

IMG_6818.jpeg

But soon they are both out

IMG_6819.jpeg

At the slightest sound they scamper back to the laundry room

IMG_6821.jpeg

Then venture out again

IMG_6823.jpeg

Everyone is sitting on the floor, reading

IMG_6825.jpeg

We want the kitties to realize we are non-threatening

IMG_6827.jpeg

So we don't look at them directly or attend to them overtly

IMG_6829.jpeg

But we do sneak peeks at them and watch over our shoulders

IMG_6832.jpeg

Here's the little female kitten

IMG_6834.jpeg

Ellie is reading in the hall outside the laundry room

IMG_6835.jpeg

The kittens passing behind Owen while he pretends to ignore them

IMG_6838.jpeg

Under Owen's remote learning school desk

IMG_6839.jpeg

They're confident enough to start climbing now

IMG_6841.jpeg

But not THAT confident. They still dark back to the laundry room if startled

IMG_6847.jpeg

But they're relaxed enough to think about playing

IMG_6848.jpeg

We bring out the laser pointer

IMG_6850.jpeg

The male is comfortable enough to crouch

IMG_6853.jpeg

Both go after the pointer, which means they're comfortable enough to let down their guard and play

IMG_6856.jpeg

Exploring the next higher level in the room: the piano bench

IMG_6858.jpeg

And the dress up hamper

IMG_6859.jpeg

And the TOP of the piano, after pressing the keys!

IMG_6861.jpeg

This made some noise last time!

IMG_6864.jpeg

They discover the window to the patio

IMG_6866.jpeg

And the space above the books.

IMG_6867.jpeg

Going deeper

IMG_6868.jpeg

They're both exploring every nook and cranny now

IMG_6869.jpeg

And the organizer for Owen's school papers

IMG_6871.jpeg

The next morning, we let them out again

IMG_6872.jpeg

They're more comfortable now. They know this place.

IMG_6875.jpeg

Owen has built them a fort

IMG_6876.jpeg

But they still go back to the laundry room to use the litter box, hooray!

IMG_6879.jpeg

They're more willing to play now!

IMG_6880.jpeg

Jumping and dancing after the lure

IMG_6881.jpeg

They no longer think they're in danger

IMG_6884.jpeg

And the pull of the lure is STRONG

IMG_8092.jpeg

Owen modifies the fort for them

IMG_8093.jpeg

The female is comfortable enough to climb into Mike's lap

IMG_8096.jpeg

In a tunnel in Owen's fort

IMG_6888.jpeg

Owen keeps the fort ever-changing

IMG_6891.jpeg

Here's the latest iteration

IMG_6893.jpeg

The female checking it out

IMG_6896.jpeg

On day 3 Owen has made another version

IMG_6898.jpeg

He is REALLY enjoying playing with the kittens

IMG_6902.jpeg

The kitties in a deep tunnel of the fort

IMG_6903.jpeg

Another version

IMG_6904.jpeg

I got them a small cat tree scratching post

IMG_6906.jpeg

They start checking it out right away

IMG_6908.jpeg

The hanging toys are intriguing

IMG_6911.jpeg

As is the window

IMG_6916.jpeg

The toys bounce and bob on their elastic lines

IMG_6928.jpeg

They bat at them from above

IMG_6931.jpeg

The kitties approach the newest version of the fort

IMG_6935.jpeg

They went inside!

IMG_6941.jpeg

Approaching again

IMG_6945.jpeg

Checking out the top of the fort

IMG_6948.jpeg

Climbing on the roof

IMG_6950.jpeg

This adds a whole new dimension

IMG_6958.jpeg

Ellie helps too

IMG_6960.jpeg

It's good to see them all play like this

IMG_6961.jpeg

One of the kitties deep in the fort

IMG_6964.jpeg

The female coming out to check out Ellie

IMG_6966.jpeg

And there's the little male coming out

IMG_6970.jpeg

Pulling on the blanket roof

IMG_6972.jpeg

Lela comes in too

IMG_6976.jpeg

The next day, the kitties are relaxed when Ellie practices piano

IMG_6983.jpeg

I give them little bird toy that chirps

IMG_6985.jpeg

This is a big and instant hit

IMG_6989.jpeg

They engage in predatory play

IMG_6991.jpeg

Including forepaw grapping and chewing

IMG_6996.jpeg

Rolling over while holding it

IMG_7003.jpeg

And our first sight of the death kick!

IMG_7006.jpeg

They find it mesmerizing

IMG_7007.jpeg

They BOTH want it

IMG_7008.jpeg

Now they start to tussle with each other

IMG_7010.jpeg

Another kitten is even more fun than a toy

IMG_7012.jpeg

Checking out the tripod set up for a piano lesson

IMG_7018.jpeg

Checking out the top of Owen's remote learning desk

IMG_7015.jpeg

We return them to the laundry room to eat and sleep

IMG_7017.jpeg

Back out the next morning

IMG_7028.jpeg

Now Owen has built an even BIGGER fort

IMG_7030.jpeg

Exploring the fort

VMXD4284.jpeg

Lela comes in too

IMG_8110.jpeg

The female in the laundry room the next morning

IMG_7043.jpeg

Playing with the cat tree

IMG_7044.jpeg

Batting at the toys from above

IMG_7046.jpeg

Both kitties going after the same bobbing toy

IMG_7058.jpeg

Exploring a new fort

IMG_7061.jpeg

Their first paper bags

IMG_7064.jpeg

It's an insta-tunnel

IMG_7065.jpeg

They both go in

IMG_7067.jpeg

Definitely a hit

IMG_7069.jpeg

Owen arranged a set of three bags

IMG_7071.jpeg

Which are a hit

IMG_7072.jpeg

This is a good way for Owen to engage with them: through play

IMG_7074.jpeg

Wacthing the kitties

IMG_7075.jpeg

On the 28th we open Ellie's room for exploration

IMG_7077.jpeg

The male comes in first

IMG_7078.jpeg

And starts exploring

IMG_7080.jpeg

First on the ground

IMG_7081.jpeg

Then up on the floor pillow

IMG_7083.jpeg

Exploring the base of the music stand

IMG_7084.jpeg

In Ellie's nook

IMG_7086.jpeg

It's good to have the kitties in here

IMG_7088.jpeg

Both are in the nook

IMG_7091.jpeg

Checking out Ellie's window seat

IMG_7092.jpeg

And the nice view into the back yard

IMG_7094.jpeg

Their exploration goes higher, onto Ellie's desk

IMG_7096.jpeg

And keyboard

IMG_7097.jpeg

Very attentive, confident tail

IMG_7098.jpeg

Owen comes in for a bit

IMG_7099.jpeg

The discover the bookshelf

IMG_7100.jpeg

There's a kitten behind the lowest level of books

IMG_7101.jpeg

Removing a cup that might get knocked over

IMG_7104.jpeg

The male in with the stuffed animals, like in E. T.

IMG_7105.jpeg

Gotta ease him down from there

IMG_7109.jpeg

Exploring some of the craft cubbies.

IMG_7110.jpeg

There's definitely quite a lot to mess with in here

IMG_7113.jpeg

Getting from bookshelf to window

IMG_7114.jpeg

You can see their exploration going higher and hither

IMG_7116.jpeg

Onto the bookshelf

IMG_7118.jpeg

The male has discovered he can get to a higher shelf

IMG_7119.jpeg

Intriguing things to sniff

IMG_7121.jpeg

Then he can get from shelf to desk

IMG_7123.jpeg

And up to windowsill

IMG_7125.jpeg

Behind the door

IMG_7126.jpeg

Now they've both found that hiding place

IMG_7132.jpeg

The next day, a kitten playing while Ellie practices

IMG_7136.jpeg

We do need to stop though so Ellie can focus

IMG_7137.jpeg

Prepping the living room for the kitties

IMG_7138.jpeg

Their new BIG cat tree by the front window

IMG_7139.jpeg

The room is all ready

IMG_7146.jpeg

We start by letting them into Lela's room, along a makeshift corridor

IMG_7148.jpeg

Here they go, exiting the family room for the first time!

IMG_7149.jpeg

First time venturing into Lela's room

IMG_7150.jpeg

View of the corridor, and Mike helping Owen with a project

IMG_7151.jpeg

In Lela's room they discover the window

IMG_7153.jpeg

And her chair

IMG_7154.jpeg

And how to get on the desk

IMG_7155.jpeg

Lela pretending to ignore them

IMG_7157.jpeg

They discover the space under the bed!

IMG_7160.jpeg

What a great place to hide

IMG_7164.jpeg

A kitty peeking out from under the bed

IMG_7167.jpeg

That evening we take down the corridor and let them in the living room

IMG_7169.jpeg

First time in the living room!

IMG_7171.jpeg

They explore the perimeter first

IMG_7172.jpeg

Around to the bookshelf side

IMG_7173.jpeg

We are studiously ignoring them

IMG_7174.jpeg

Down the hall

IMG_7175.jpeg

Bring out scratching pads

IMG_7176.jpeg

After the floor, they start exploring UP

IMG_7178.jpeg

And checking out the fire in the fireplace

IMG_7181.jpeg

Nice and warm

IMG_7185.jpeg

Up onto the puzzle table

IMG_7190.jpeg

Back to the fire, which is fascinating

IMG_7191.jpeg

Up onto the console table

IMG_7194.jpeg

And they've discovered their central cat tree

IMG_7195.jpeg

This is an interesting place

IMG_7196.jpeg

Back at the front window

IMG_7202.jpeg

We will end up taking the puzzle down

IMG_7206.jpeg

The female climbing on the cat tree

IMG_7210.jpeg

On the back of the couch

IMG_7213.jpeg

Getting playful with the cat tree!

IMG_7214.jpeg

Discovering the really tall cat tree by the front window!

IMG_7217.jpeg

And figuring out how to get down

IMG_7219.jpeg

DIscovering a human in the papasan chair
